Tope completed post-doctoral research in the Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition at UNC Chapel Hill under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Sandler and Dr. Kay Lund from 1992 to 1998. She started her independent research in 1998 as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Digestive Diseases and Nurtrition.

Tope co-directed the High Throughput Genotyping Core at UNC from 2003 to 2012, and currently co-directs the UNC CGIBD Imaging and Histology Core, and has done so since 2004.

She is currently a Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at UNC Chapel Hill, where her research focuses on the etiology and prevention of colorectal cancer. Her specific expertise lies in the evaluation of biomarkers such as mucosal proliferation, apoptosis, and inflammation in relation to coloreactal adenomas and cancer. Most recently, her research has focused on the invesitgation of the gut microbiota, inflammation, and diet in relation to colorectal adenomas.

Nikki began working at UNC Chapel Hill in the CGIBD Histology Core in 2007–a core co-directed by Dr. Keku. In 2008 she transitioned to the Keku Lab as a lab manager and research technician.
